Movie Review: Monsters vs Aliens (2009)

What is the movie about?monsters vs aliens

When Susan Murphy (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) is struck by a meteorite on her wedding day, she is transformed into a giant and it first appears that her life from then on will be ruined. However, the government soon find a need for Susan (renamed to her ‘monster name’ Ginormica) and her monster friends when the world comes under attack from aliens. Her and the other monsters must fight the aliens and save the world from destruction, in exchange for being released from the special government compound where they are held. Susan soon discovers that her new life with her new friends is better than she ever thought it would be…

Were the cast any good?

With Monsters vs Aliens being an animated movie there is only room here to judge the voice acting and it was indeed to the expected high standard. There were a few big names voicing the main characters (Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie), but in truth all the voice acting fitted with the animation perfectly, and all had that enthusiasm and character required from an animated family movie.

What was good about the movie?

Monsters vs Aliens is very much your classic animated film that you would expect from Dreamworks or Pixar. Fairly simple and fun for the kids, with plenty of jokes to keep the adults entertained too. Personally, my favourite character was President Hathaway (voiced by Stephen Colbert) for his antics while dealing with the alien invasion. Here is a clip of of President Hathaway in action:

What was bad about the movie?

At the beginning of the movie it is not immediately clear how the action on screen relates to the title of the movie and therefore appears to have quite an unusual beginning. With very few funny moments, no monsters and no aliens, it’s sure to raise a few eyebrows for the first 15 minutes. After this point, everything seems to click into place nicely and you can stop wondering why you are watching a seemingly dull and unfunny movie.

Would you watch it again?

Though I am a fan of animations (the animation was top-notch by the way), I don’t think this is one I would watch that many times. As an adult, you could only watch it again for the jokes and of course they will wear thin after multiple viewings. Kids on the other hand would certainly enjoying watching it once more.

Who would you recommend it to?

Monsters vs Aliens is a funny, family friendly movie and so is perfect for children or anyone who wants to relax, have a laugh and watch something easy-going. Don’t expect Arnold Schwarzenegger to image and terminate someone though, just expect a fantasy sci-fi animated adventure with plenty of silly laughs along the way.
